I like to read. I like to read a lot, actually, but I’m a picky asshole when it comes to what I’ll waste the little time I do have on. Some other peeps I’ve stalked on here call the people they repeatedly buy, auto buy authors, so with the way I read Melyssa Winchester, she’s my auto buy.
Some like to say it’s because we’re best friends in real life. I like to correct them and say it’s because I like the way she writes. It has nothin to do with our friendship. If she writes shit, I’m callin her on it. That simple.
When she came to me months ago askin if she could put the story we’re writing together on hold (our slightly fictional real life story) because she had a dream that wouldn’t leave her alone and she had to write it, I’d been supportive. Until she said that the dream was stepbrother/sister related.
I’m gonna be completely fuckin honest with you. Have you read step brother romances? I’m not takin anythin away from the authors because most of them theyre written really well, but they all follow the same formula. I didn’t want that for Melyssa. After Count On Me and the others, this scared the shit out of me.
I voiced my hatred of this loudly to her. It’s the way I am. I made her a promise that I would never bullshit her and I didn’t here. I was pretty rough on her about it and she took it, turned it sideways and threw it back at me, making me eat my words.
Sure this is a stepbrother romance, but it’s a book about family, connection, growth and coming of age more than that. Melyssa took two teens and had them fall in love, never knowin at the time that their parents were doin the same thing. Then she had them react. The mom and dad, and Emery and Christian. They all reacted and in very real ways.
This is the Melyssa Winchester I love reading. She did the same with Count on Me. Took autism and abuse (taboo subjects no one really wants to open up about) and put them under this microscope in such a real and emotional way. The Space In Between is exactly like that, but better.
There’s no special needs here. There’s no abuse or violence. There is just love (first and real), heartbreak, happiness and pain. This story is a journey in everything. Will it change your life? Nope. It’s not the Count On Me series, but it will make you feel.
And that’s what I’m starting to see is MW’s thing. She makes you feel stuff. So if feelin stuff is your thing, you’ll dig this.
Melyssa Winchester, thanks for makin me feel stuff.
Synopsis
Well here we are.
Senior Year.
A year that by definition means I’ll be one of about 300 other kids running my school.
Greenville High.
I know what you’re all thinking. “Oh no, here comes the book about the virgin wallflower who the popular guy meets and instantly falls for.”
Wrong.
I’m not an ugly duckling that the cool cats use to make themselves look like even bigger jerks, and I’m definitely not a wallflower, though that whole virginal thing, well that’s really none of your business.
I’m just the girl more interested in taking pictures and playing on her acoustic than getting caught up in the petty drama that four years of high school is guaranteed to create.
Until Christian.
I know, I know. It’s always a guy isn’t it?
Girl on the fast track to any college she chooses, always seems to get tripped up by the guy.
But hear me out! This guy…he’s different.
You see, Christian Cayne isn’t just some guy I almost ran down on my first day here and later fell in love with.
I wish it were that simple.
It would make what’s gotta happen now easier.
Christian is a lot of things to a lot of people since he landed here with his dad at the end of the summer, but in a couple of months, he’s going to have to be one thing only to me.
My step-brother.

Excerpt
“It makes no
difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how hopeless the outlook, how
muddled the tangle, how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love
will dissolve it all.”
He’s quoting what
sounds like poetry. Fantastic. What does this have to do with what he’s been
holding back from me?
“I don’t get it.”
“Emery, what Emmet
Fox is saying, the last line. It’s my secret.”
The last line. I repeat, going over his words, trying to
remember it word for word and failing miserably. I was too confused by the
quote to actually pay attention to the entire thing and now I’m paying for it.
Just as I’m about to have him explain it, repeat it again or break it down in
his own words so I can finally make sense of it, one word from it comes to mind
and I don’t need further explanation.
I know what he means now.
“Love.” I repeat and
he nods slowly, the hint of a smile beginning to creep up the side of his face.
“It was realization
of love, but what I wanted you to remember, you did.”
“What are you trying
to say, Chris?”
“I’m trying to say
what I should have been saying…all along.” He stammers nervously, fidgeting
with his fingers while looking from me to the floor and back again. “I’m trying
to say that I love you Emery.”
Christian loves me.
Okay wow. I need to
let that sink in for a minute. Hit stop on the tape and rewind. Push play and
hope that I can hear those four magical words again.
I love you, Emery.
Yeah, that’s it.
Just like that.
Tossing the puzzle
piece to the floor, no longer caring about making our perfect picture when it’s
taking place right in front of me, I move, and almost as though we’re
synchronized, or he wanted this as badly as I did, I crawl into his waiting
arms and I wrap my arms around him tight, all while his words play on repeat in
my mind like a broken VCR that you never want to get fixed.
I love you Emery.
Tears start falling
and instead of reaching up and wiping them away, I just let them fall, the feel
of his arms around me, the security that’s come with it since the very first
time he did it in September, all I care about.
“What took you so
long?” I whisper against his neck softly and despite the way it sounds, all
garbled and stuffy from what I know is my string of tears and now runny nose,
he chuckles.
“If I took too long,
you could have just saved me the trouble and said it yourself.”
Oh I’ll show him ‘say it yourself’.
“Christian,” I say
pulling back just enough to be able to look him straight in the eye. “You had
me at ‘I’m sorry’.”
“Huh? I’m sorry? You
mean when I apologized for ruining the date?”
Grinning at his
confusion while at the same time getting a perverse pleasure from the way his
entire face seems to scrunch up as he tries to place what I mean, I wait a few
breaths before solving the mystery.
“The day we met and
I almost ran you over. The first words you said to me were ‘I’m sorry’. Nothing
has ever felt the same since. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I love you
too, maybe even more.”
“Wow, you actually
remembered what we said to each other the first day?” he asks, obviously
surprised that something that small, a few random minutes in time, had left
such a lasting impact on me.
What I need to make
him see is that all of his words to me, our conversation since that day are
locked away tightly in my memory because I’ve kept them so intricately woven
around my heart, the same way I have with him.
“My life changed
that day, Mikey. Of course I’d remember everything about it.”
Moving my arm away
from his neck as I feel his start to move and lift around it, I watch as it
comes up to his face and his thumb and forefinger come together as he wipes at
his eyes.
Holy crap.
He’s crying.
I made him cry.
About The Author
Melyssa is a mother of four from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Previously spending her daylight hours freelance editing for friends and family, she happily traded in her gig for a rewarding career writing young adult novels. The best part being that in working from home, she gets to spend more time with her own set of real life angels.
She’s currently working on standalone
titles, Heroine and Remembering Sunday.
When she’s not writing, you can find her
buried under the covers with her portable DVD player, watching marathons of
Supernatural and Veronica Mars. When those aren’t available, she can be found
curled up in a corner with her e-reader and a plethora of books, falling in
love with characters written so well she deems them her book boyfriends and
girlfriends. If you want to find her, check Facebook or Twitter
(@WinchesterBooks) as she may just have an addiction to both. If those don’t
work you can always keep up with her progress on her personal site.
