120 Days by M. Stratton is a book that no matter
how many times and ways I’ve tried to label it, cannot be placed in one specific
place. It’s a book of love. One of hope and one of growth and change. It’s an
emotional story that right from the first page, grabs a hold of you and never let’s
go.
This is my first experience with this author, and
as such, I sort of went in blind to her writing style from previous books
(regardless of whatever genre they may fall into), but once the first page was
turned and the story began to unfold, I knew it wouldn’t be my last go round.
There was a way with words here that not only touched
my heart, but left behind marks on my soul by the time I turned the last page.
Marks that even now, a week later, are still there. I can still feel this book.
I suppose the reason I’ve had such a hard time
sitting down and reviewing this is because the connection that I normally get
when I read has been amplified. What brings Ethan and Samantha together at the beginning
of this story and what carries them through right until the end, I have
firsthand experience with.
Cancer.
I’m going to be honest. I wasn’t sure I was going
to be able to make it through this. I didn’t think my heart was equipped to
read about something that was way too close to home for me, but I am so glad
that I didn’t let it stop me because just like Ethan needed Last Resort, I
needed this story.
I needed the hope that was poured into all of
these pages. The happiness and the strength that both the characters that weren’t
patients and the patients showed as the story progressed. The empowerment and
fight that came from reading the real life inspirational stories that were
placed at the end of it.
When I say that this book is life changing, it’s
not me trying to sell it to you. It’s because it’s true. Because it changed
mine.
The way Ethan’s brother’s journal entries on a
chapter to chapter basis connected so fluidly to what took place within each
chapter was fantastic. His happiness and joy, his pain and his fear as he lived
out his remaining days, they all connected to not only Ethan but Samantha as
well, as these two beautiful human beings (although Ethan was a little rough
around the edges at the start), found happiness, both in each other and on
their own.
I would like to be able to say this book ends with
a happily ever after. That cancer didn’t touch these two other more than it
already had with her parents and his brother, and they rode off into the sunset
together at the end, but I can’t. That’s what made this book so incredible
though because while it didn’t end in the traditional romance sense, it did end
beautifully.
Sacrifices were made, lives were forever altered,
but the one thing that remained true through it all was that it was all infused
with the deepest of loves.
I want to be able to say more, but it is my belief
that in order to truly feel the effects of this story, to grasp the real
meaning in its pages, you have to experience it for yourself. You need to read
it. Feel it. No amount of breaking it down or retelling the plot will do it the
justice it truly deserves.
M. Stratton and everyone else involved in letting
me receive an ARC of this book before release, I thank you from the bottom of
my heart. It was a journey that I’m so very thankful that I took and one that
long after that last page was turned will stay with me.
