I have to say before I review the book
that going into this story, I’d never read anything by this author before, so
there was a bit of trepidation in terms of what I was going to be in for once I
started. It deepened when I realized this was a series, because I wasn’t sure
if I was going to be able to follow along and review properly based on the fact
that 6 other books came before this one.
As it turns out, this while containing aspects of the other family members from previous books at parts, can be read entirely standalone. There were no moments of confusion in terms of previous books and what I may have missed.
Cassie is a young woman that’s spent the majority of her life sheltered from the darker realities of the world going on around her, though she is in typical young adult fashion rebelling against her parents. Especially when it pertains to her boyfriend Brantley. The epitome of bad boy, she’s fallen for him and despite her family telling her the truth about the type of guy he is, she’s already in too deep. She’s in love and no one, not even those that love her most is going to tell her different.
So what does a young woman do when she’s head over heels in love with a boy that no one else seems to approve of? She runs away with him. But she got a whole lot more than she bargained for in doing that and despite her head an inner voice, along with Brantley showing her quite early on that she made the wrong choice, love makes her stay.
Drawing her into a world that she has never known before and taking her down a path that the more I read, I was afraid she might never be able to break free of. This book and the issues presented within it are definitely not for the faint of heart. So if drug abuse, sexual situations (multiple partners etc) offends you, this one might not be the book for you.
I have to admit, I wasn’t all that eager to see this girl’s descent, just how far she would fall. As real as these issues are in a day to day for some people, I wasn’t chomping at the bit to see it portrayed in what is labelled as a contemporary romance, but even knowing that, I stayed because I had to see this girl come out on the other end. Away from the darkness she’d been thrown into and had turned into really and being given something better.
The situation that Brant brings her into, it’s not an easy one to read. It has the ability to turn your stomach, seeing where she started and where she ends up and a lot of it is graphic. It was definitely not pretty and was hard to read, but it made what happens in the end that much more fulfilling because we’re given a very real visual of what she was living with.
Enter Logan. I didn’t see Logan coming, I have to admit that. When I read the blurb, I assumed this was going to be her and Brant strictly, but he was a nice surprise. A savior of sorts. A man that stepped in when it was quite obvious that Cassie wasn’t strong enough anymore to save herself and attempts to do the right thing by her in order to make it happen.
Tragedy strikes. Cassie’s world is rocked to the core, but where it appears that we’ve hit rock bottom with no real upswing in sight, it does. With the help of Logan, Cassie is able to put things in perspective, deal with her loss (which to me wasn’t that much of a loss at all considering what happened) and move on with her life. Enjoy herself again. Be herself after spending so long having to be someone else when she was with Brant.
I enjoyed the way this ended. Cassie being able to come out on the other end and stronger than before. What Logan did to get her there may have been horrible, but in the end, I felt it was right and I adored him for what he did, even at the expense of his own heart and feelings.
My only complaint was that I wanted just a little bit more with Logan and Cassie. We had been given such a deep look into the seedier part of the life she had been thrown into when she ran away from home, that I wanted the same amount given to this aspect as well. Something that would eventually put her on the right path (and back with the family that seems to love her).
But when you take the new found romance out of it, you’re left with what I felt the book was really about. This truly was a coming of age tale for Cassie. She went through so much and as time progressed, had to live with that and use it to grow up. Become the person I do believe she was always meant to be before her feelings for Brantley took her down the wrong road.
Despite the heavy way this book started, I enjoyed the way it ended and it’s a book that I’m glad I took the chance on.
