Genre: Contemporary Romance
He was that boy in the playground.
The one that pulled your pigtails.
The one that lifted your dress in front of the entire school.
Now he's that guy in the office.
The one that steals your lunch from the fridge.
The one that gets away with everything.
I'm sure you know him. Everyone knows that guy.
He's a #JERK.
Presley Malone knew her relationship with her fiancé, Jason, had run its course.
The second that ring came off her finger, she didn't expect to be the pawn in an immature game played by the office jerk.
His name is Haden Cooper, and he is six years younger than her. Immature and irresponsible, getting drunk and stoned every weekend like he never left college. He rode a motorcycle, carrying a different girl each week. He was everything a jerk should be—insensitive, unreliable, and most importantly, a heartbreaker.
Haden enjoyed playing games, and when it came to Presley Malone, it was all too easy. Miss Know-it-all with her over-the-top OCD was soon going to get a taste of what it was like to live on the edge.
But what starts off as an innocent prank soon becomes an unhealthy obsession.
He is wrong for her and she is wrong for him. It's a battle of the sexes ready to go to war. But in this battle there are no winners, and it takes only one fateful night and six tequilas for their lives to take an unexpected turn that changes them both forever.
Deep into the second chapter of an erotic thriller, I feel the presence of someone beside me. The charcoal grey pants are a dead giveaway and inadvertently, I groan, granting myself some patience to deal with him today. Why the fuck won’t he just leave me alone? I’ve met my share of annoying human beings but Haden Cooper takes the cake.
“I’m taking orders,” he huffs in annoyance.
I give him my full attention and decide to have a little fun with him. After all, he did ruin a blouse that even the dry cleaners declared a write-off for. Yes, I will have fun. Serves him right for being such a jerk.
“At my beck and call? Well I’ll have the roast chicken on rye, lettuce, tomato, and no mayo. I repeat—no mayo.”
He stares back at me without writing down my order.
“You might want to write it down.”
“I have a good enough memory.”
A loose laugh escapes me. “That’s funny, I think Trina down on ten would beg to differ.”
His eyes twitch, caught in an awkward moment. I want to see what pathetic excuse he has for this.
“Who?”
“Really, Haden? I don’t know how men can just screw around with strangers and not even take a moment to remember someone’s name,” I rant.
He leans on my desk and rubs the slight stubble on his chin. “You seem awfully interested in my sex life, Presley Malone. Is there something I’m missing here?”
“What?” I shoot back, almost a little too nervous. “Please, I wouldn’t touch you with a ten-foot pole. No, make it a twenty-foot pole with an extension. God, you’re so insensitive. You don’t care about anyone’s feelings and have zero respect in the workplace.”
“Anything else?”
“Plus, you’re a jerk.”

Before picking up #Jerk, I had no
previous experience with this author. She was a completely blank slate for me
but with that title, the synopsis and then the cover, well I had to jump into
unfamiliar waters.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention off
the top that while I didn’t know about it before jumping in, it does indeed
involve a love triangle. Something that for most might be a definite no-no, but
one I had to keep reading to see how it played out. And for me, with the way
that other relationship was portrayed and then the reasons we’re given for it
as time moves on, it didn’t hold much weight other than keeping these two
apart.
I didn’t really believe in the other
woman whatsoever and whenever she was on the page, I got literally no vibe off
her at all. It almost felt at times like she was a placeholder. Which was fine
because honestly, none of this was about her really anyway.
It was about watching a young jerk get
his head on straight (after a whole lot of jerky missteps) and watching Presley
change into the person she is at the end of the book. Less anal retentive and
OCD in her mannerisms and loosened up. Followed up only by watching these two
characters awkwardly fall in love.
This book isn’t typical in the way it’s
presented. For one, Presley is older than the #jerk Haden and their
relationship is in no way conventional. He’s all for acting the typical playboy
and she’s looking for something “more”. Her life and the way it had gone up
until that point (including the relationship with her ex) becoming mundane.
For a good portion of this book, I can’t
even say with any degree of certainty that they had much of a relationship at
all. Well, aside from Presley wanting to kill the jerk and Haden deserving it a
lot of the time. And it was in these moments that I couldn’t help wanting them
together. There was just something about the way they interacted that screamed
for it.
Right off the jump (I’m talking Prologue
people), you get to see where Haden stands in this thing. What he puts in
motion here and what ultimately does not play out quite the way he imagined it
when he started. You see his motivations before we’re thrown into Presley’s
point of view. For the majority of the story, you’re shown things through
Presley’s eyes only, but I did enjoy the brief times we were allowed inside
Haden’s.
Who knew being inside the mind of a jerk
could be so entertaining? Lol
It’s hard to review this without giving
significant pieces of it away, so if you’re looking for a more in depth
description, you won’t find it here, but it definitely turned out to be
something a whole lot more than I was expecting when I started.
I especially enjoyed the level of humor
throughout. The awkwardness of what takes place here kind of demanded it, but
it always seemed to hit its mark and was a fantastic addition to the story.
Both with the main characters and all of the background players that made
appearances throughout.
The pacing was fantastic. This book read
a whole lot faster than I was expecting it to for a full length story. I have
to admit I was looking for a more concrete ending here, maybe one that started
taking place a little farther away from the end than this one did, but overall
that didn’t hinder the reading experience too much. At the end of the day, what
Haden wants in the beginning is what he gets, with a bunch of added benefits
added to it.
It was an enjoyable first read from this
author and a book that I’m glad I took the chance on. My thanks to the author
and all others involved in letting me read this before the release date. It was
a pleasure.
