This book was an
unexpected treat.
I’ve never had the
pleasure of reading this author before, but I’m glad this is the story that
started the journey.
There were many
things I enjoyed about this story, but the truth of the matter is, the cover
brought me in first. I’m not known for being someone that goes on cover alone,
but in this case, it was. Followed very quickly by the blurb.
I’m a sucker for a
good single parent love story. Mainly because I am one—a single parent. The
idea of falling in love, well I enjoy that too, so put those two things
together and usually, I’m all over it. This one drew me in even more because it
wasn’t about a single mother, the way a lot seem to be. This one tackled life
as a single father, but even more than that, when it’s a surprise, even to you
that it’s happening at all.
What lies beneath
these pages, it’s not just a love story though. It’s a family story. It’s about
just how not alone you are, especially when like Ridge, you’ve got the support
system of a family and friends that are as good as family behind you. I enjoyed
that aspect most of all. Just how bonded everyone was to one another. You could
see the love, in every facet, shining through not only the main characters, but
everyone else as well. Kudos to the author for that.
With the way this
book started, I have to admit I saw it all going down a different way, or at
least I thought I knew how it was going to play out. I was wrong and quite
early on, you’re put through the emotional ringer. You can’t help feeling for
Ridge and ultimately for Knox My heart, it caught in my throat, I actually
cried a few tears as it broke for these two guys (one little and one not so
little) and I just wanted to read as quickly as possible to find out just how
it would all play out. I wanted something better for everyone.
I got what I wanted.
I think everyone did by books end and honestly, it was a pretty adorable, sweet
and moving journey getting there. There was minimal drama here, which was also
a nice switch from a lot of the books I’ve been reading as of late, and definitely
no real drama for drama’s sake. I do think that something that happens quite
later in the story, a bombshell that is dropped and the reoccurrence of a
person I had really been hoping never to have seen was a little too much, but
overall, with the amount of focus given to both, it didn’t take me away from
the story in a long lasting impactful way.
I can’t write this
review without also stating how refreshing it was to have a couple talking
through things. Instances from the past that came to light, you had a man who
didn’t want to let his woman go through it alone, and a woman that after just the
right amount of coaxing, let it all out. Ridge and Kendall were very open and
honest with each other throughout this and it just made for a beautifully
refreshing read.
Overall, this was a
book that even though it took me longer than I would have liked (silly real
life getting in the way) to read it, I’m extremely glad I trusted my gut on and
tried. It was definitely one of the sweetest stories, for multiple reasons that
I’ve read this year.
My thanks to the
author and all others involved in letting me read this before official release.
Kendall, Knox, and Ridge’s journey is one that I was so very blessed to have
taken.
