Exclusive Excerpt
It was the early eighties, Maryann and I were barely
legal but that didn’t stop us from painting the town red. I had a part-time job
at Rosalie’s bakery, making just enough money to spend my paycheck—that’s a
lie. I never received a paycheck, those days we were paid in cash, sixty
dollars stuffed in a white envelope that Rosalie scribbled my name on. It was
enough cash for me to buy a brand new outfit every Friday. I would take my
envelope, cross three avenues and make my way to Something Else boutique on 86th
Street.
I teased my hair six inches to the sky, applied enough
blue eyeshadow to my eyelids, you had no choice but to notice my almond shaped
eyes. Lastly, I ripped the tags and put on my silk turquoise jumpsuit. Maryann
stole her father’s car out of the garage and picked me up at exactly ten
o’clock. Studio 54 was packed, the line to get inside the club wrapped around
the block but Maryann grabbed my hand and walked us straight to the front of
the line.
“I’m a friend of Val’s,” she told the bouncer guarding
the door.
At the time, I only knew Val as one of the
neighborhood guys. He, like most of the guys our age living in Bensonhurst,
hung around with the old-timers, the made-men, goodfellas—you know the type of
men I’m talking about. Gangsters.
I didn’t know if Val was in fact a made man or part of
a family, I just knew one day he would be and I understood why Maryann had
taken a liking toward him. Who didn’t find that type of man sexy? There was
nothing more attractive than the unattainable bad boy who exuded charisma.
The bouncer lifted the red velvet rope and escorted us
into the pulsating night club. I remember the song playing as I stepped foot
onto the colorful dance floor that lit up as the patrons danced the night away,
‘How Deep Is Your Love’ by the Bee Gees. It was one of my favorites and I
wanted to dance so badly but Maryann had other plans, taking my hand as she dragged
me across the dance floor to the bar where Val stood. He was surrounded by a
bunch of guys, some I knew and others were a mystery. A delicious mystery.
“Order us a couple of Long Island Iced Teas and I’ll
be right back,” she shouted over the music.
I sat down at the bar and ordered the drinks, glancing
across the bar as she worked her way into the circle and straight to Val. The
bartender placed the two drinks in front of me and I waited five minutes before
I pulled the little paper umbrella from the glass and lifted the straw to my
lips.
I averted my eyes back to the other end of the bar and
noticed Maryann and Val had disappeared from the crowd.
“Those things are lethal,” a voice said from behind
me, forcing me to spin around on the bar stool and stare at the most handsome
man I ever laid eyes on.
The first thing I noticed was his clothes. He wasn’t
dressed like the other men. His charcoal gray suit looked as if it was tailor
made for him. He opted to wear a black turtleneck under the suit, no button
down, collar popping shirt for the handsome stranger before me. He did however
engage in the fad of gold chains. My eyes zeroed in on the crucifix dangling
from the thick, gold rope chain hanging around his neck. I lifted my eyes to
his face and was greeted by a smile I’d never forget.
His eyes drifted toward the two drinks that sat in
front of me to the empty stool beside me.
“May I?”
“Sure,” I said, twirling back around to face the bar
as he slipped onto the stool and signaled for the bartender.
He ordered a Martini, dry with extra olives as I toyed
with the paper umbrella and brought my drink to my lips for another sip. The
song changed, Tavares filtered the nightclub with their hit, ‘More Than a
Woman’.
“What’s your name, beautiful?” He asked, casually
draping an arm over the back of my stool.
“Grace,” I said, mesmerized by the way he stared so
intently at me.
“Grace,” he repeated, testing the name on his tongue,
grinning once he decided he liked the way it sounded.
“And who are you?” I stammered, taking another sip,
hoping to calm my nerves. This man had the power to undo me with a simple
glance.
“Me? I’m the man who’s going to marry you one day,” he
said pointedly.
I nearly spat my drink out.
“That’s pretty presumptuous don’t you think?” Or cocky
depending on who you ask, I added silently.
He grinned at me as he lifted his hand and ran his
index finger down my cheek.
“Watch and see, Gracie,” he promised, dropping his
hand but keeping his gaze locked on me. “The name is Victor, Victor Pastore.”
It
is so easy to forget those first blissful moments when you meet the person
you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with. Instead, we harbor the
resentment life has brought upon us and lose touch of the magic that brought
two unsuspecting strangers together.
Sitting
across from the man I love for the final time I wonder how I ever let myself
become so jaded by the trials and tribulations we stumbled upon in our years
together. Why did I let the heartache trump the happiness? Why couldn’t I hang
on to all the times he made me smile, all the times I looked into his eyes and
knew I was his one and only. Why wasn’t the love we created enough to outweigh
the torment of the mob?

Rating: ★★★★★
Four days.
I’ve been finished with this story for four days now and what held me back from reviewing it the night I finished was the sheer amount of tears pouring out of my eyes. Tears of happiness, tears of sadness and sorrow, and tears because at least in the larger sense, this journey for all of these people, is over.
People—characters (I know they’re not real) that have become like family to me. The same way that each of them, as couples and singularly have become to one another.
What held me back every day since, was still emotion, but lack of words to capture it. To do this book the justice it deserves for every single thing it made me feel. I still don’t think I have the words, but Janine, these characters, god, everyone involved in this deserves them, so here’s me giving my best shot.
I was scared to read this. Normally with a Tempted book, I’m devouring it in hours, not days, but this one, knowing what it was in a grand finale kind of way, I was scared out of my mind to start. I didn't want it to end. I was afraid of what this author and the characters that are guiding her would do to my heart. My already fragile and on the edge heart because of the last few books in this series.
All of them if I’m being honest.
But read I did, and I’m here, living and breathing afterward, but with my heart in my hands, more than ready to hand it over to the author for the journey she took me on. Though I’m not quite sure if I want to hit her or hug her for it.
What separates this book from the others that came before it is that you’re reading things from not only the point of view of the matriarch and patriarch of this entire series, in Grace and Victor, but you’re also getting an up close and personal look at all of the couples that came before. Ones you’ve already fallen in love with, rooted for, or if you’re anything like me, cried for. It’s a full reading experience because no stone has been left unturned throughout. You’re in their heads and hearts every step of the way. Which for this reader, was an added bonus because after being drawn so deeply into this world with the others, it was good to continue on in much the same vein.
There were moments in this story, where I feel as though the author bled through. Her life, experiences she’s lived through, things that were said, thoughts that were internally spoken. I felt as though not only were these characters talking to me, but Janine was too. Especially as it pertained to Victor and Grace’s daughters Adrianna and Nikki and I’ll be damned if that didn’t hit me even harder emotionally than it already had just by the mere mention of Bones (don’t even get me started on that…bawling like a baby still). It connected me even more to the story and my hat is off to the author for that because I was already in deep.
I just happened to learn through this book, you can go deeper.
I was moved by this story, especially given the particular situation surrounding Victor. Here’s where the fear played a part again and I put the book down for a while, but where the author took great care in her handling of it once I emotionally prepared and picked it up again. From someone that has been diagnosed with something like Victor is, I’m always scared to read stories featuring it because it has me questioning my own mortality and often times, I have to pull myself out of the despair that the characters find themselves in. I didn’t have that issue here. What I did feel was a kinship with a mob boss. A connection with the family he would eventually leave behind and every single person he affected.
I cried for him. With him. I was moved so incredibly by the love that was shown, the forgiveness that was given and the strength that shined through it all, from everyone. More than I ever have been with any book that came before it.
What else can I say? I keep repeating the same things it seems, but this final ride, it was everything. A journey of hope, love, strength and change. A ride from darkness to light, beginning to end to beginning. A story ripe with realism, but based in this unbelievable and out of this world situation. It was a story about family just as much as it was a love story mixed with a fight to the finish against the greatest of enemies.
It was all of these things and so much more, and as I close the door on this final chapter (at least as it pertains to these particular characters), I carry it with me close to my heart. Knowing that even with all of the losses suffered, the hits everyone seemed to take, these people, these beautifully damaged and dented but not broken people, they’ll be okay. They’ll be loved, treasured, desired and adored. Their legacy to live on long after the final door closes.
After the final ride.
So, enough of my rambling. Go, snag up books one to five, fall in love with each of these couples, grab this one and really meet Victor and Grace, catch up with the old friends from the previous books I told you to devour and see what I mean. Let this book do what it did with me and let it make you believe in the power of love and of family, with light winning over the darkness.
It’s my hope that when you do, you’ll love it as much as I did.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read this final ride. It was a journey I am so glad to have taken and one that will live on forever in my heart. Where it counts.
