But the bond is only temporary, and Daiya will be forced to satiate the demon inside her, time and time again. For that is the burden of the Lilituria. But Daiya doesn’t want to hurt anyone—especially not the cute guy in class, with his annoying charm and fervent persistence. Staying away from Kai Stanton is the smart thing to do. The only choice she has. But when she loses control and kisses him, everything changes, and Daiya knows their connection is deeper than just fleeting lust. Determined to uncover the truth, Daiya finds herself at the heart of an ancient prophecy that could alter the balance of good and evil forever. "You said something before, when we first met," I said.
"What?"
"You said you'd been the new guy once. What did you mean?"
"I moved to Decker on my thirteenth birthday. New town, new school, new friends." He shrugged as if it wasn’t a big deal.
"Oh, come on." I nudged him. "Star hockey player, you couldn't have struggled to fit in that much."
Kai ran a hand through is hair. "I was in a bad place back then."
Something about the bitterness in Kai's voice silenced my reply. Instead, I said, "What's a girl got to do to get a drink around here?"
Kai laughed, a deep rumble vibrating from his chest. "This way, milady." He stood and offered his hand.
We collected orders from the rest of the group and made our way to the kitchen.
"What'll it be?" he asked from the refrigerator.
"Soda is fine."
"Why do I get the feeling you don't live life in the fast lane?" His head disappeared behind the door.
"Are you calling me boring?"
He reappeared. "I like it. I can't explain it, Daiya, but I feel like I've known you longer than a couple of weeks. Is that crazy?"
"I—"
Kai closed the door and placed down a couple of cans of soda. His eyes burned through me as he stalked forward, and I stepped back, my back hitting the counter that ran the length of the room.
"Kai, I …" My eyes shuttered, the flames building. I clutched the amethyst teardrop through my hoodie, and Kai's eyes dropped to my chest. When they met mine again, they were swirling with lust.
"Daiya."
I swallowed hard, my mouth dry.
"What is happening between us?"
My heart thumped against my chest so hard I felt a little lightheaded, but still, Kai's eyes didn't let up, and I was sure I would combust from the charged look he was giving me.
He inched closer and reached out for my hair. Pinching a strand behind his fingers, Kai smiled. "All I can think about right now is kissing you." His eyes dropped to my mouth. "I remember the way you taste."
"I …" My lips parted. I wanted this. I wanted to experience Kai's mouth on mine for real. Not like it had been in the bar or how it was in my dreams. But something held me back, and I pressed my hands against his chest, inhaling a strained breath. "We should get back out there." I released a sigh, hoping he could see that I wanted this, but I just wasn’t ready to cross that line.
Not until I knew what it meant.
Kai's head dropped to mine, and he let out a long breath of his own.
Why had I pulled away? This was what I wanted, wasn't it? But what if the prophecy was wrong? What if what Kai was experiencing was just a reaction to me? To my awakening?
"Hey." His soft voice brought me back to the room. "Come on."
I nodded and forced my lips into a smile. But the thoughts wouldn't leave. There were too many questions still. Too many outcomes. And one stood out above all the others: even if what Kai and I felt was real, there would come a day when he discovered who I was.
What I was.
And then what?

I’m incredibly picky when it comes to paranormal reads. I’ve read quite a lot of them over the years and it’s because of this, and usually a lot of recycled ideas that I’ve become so picky. So to take one on, especially with a new author, not knowing if I would click with her writing style, the characters, even the background for the characters and the situations they find themselves in, can be a scary task.

But Grace White made a believer out of this reader.

With any YA/NA read, there are of course the core things you expect going in. The age of the characters playing a part, especially when based around high school, and when you add romance into the mix, a lot of the upheaval that comes along with hormones and feelings. And there were aspects of that here, at least from some of the more secondary characters. But as it pertained to the main characters, I saw something different.

Not unheard of, but definitely different and with the way this story unfolded, I think it fit perfectly.

This is a more YA book but it reads older. The characters even appear older than their actual age, and that was one of the things that drew me in most. How unlike the way I imagined they’d be, that they were. Then there’s the history. Who and what Daiya really is. What could have drowned in detail, was crisp, concise and came together beautifully. The background described here, for Daiya and her sisters, the prophecy and just what it would mean for everyone involved, I was hooked because it read original. Different.

Which I suppose is the buzz word for this story overall. It was different in every imaginable way. Even ending in a cliffhanger the way this does, it wasn’t one of those cliffhangers where you groan and wanna throw the book at the wall lol. At least it wasn’t for me. I hate cliffhangers in general, but when it comes to this one, and the AHA moment I had when it all happened, I’d venture to say this may be the one book in a long string of series style books where I loved it. I think it was masterfully crafted because leading into it, all I could do was speculate. I could only hope that I was right. It wasn’t predictable in any way.

The flow of the writing was fantastic. With stories that contain elements such as demons and higher powers, even magic, you expect it to move slower, but as I said above, it all moved in a very crisp and quick way, while still giving you all the details and little tidbits you need to know in order to connect. Each little bit of information given, timed in a way where you felt as though you were learning right along with the main character as things came to light. It was engaging, it made you think and for this reader, that’s exactly what I’m after.

Are there still questions to be answered? Are there still more secrets yet to be told? Absolutely. And I for one can’t wait to get them. Because with the way this story ended, it feels as though it’s only the beginning. For Daiya, Kai and their families. This book was the jumping off point for one hell of a ride. A ride I’m definitely glad that I took.

If you like getting lost in a world that while based in part around the one we live in, captures you and takes you into another one, this may be the book for you. Same goes if you’re into paranormal romance, or even just young adult reads in general. I really think you’ll enjoy it as much, if not more than I did.

My thanks to the author and all others involved for letting me read a copy of this before release. Daiya’s journey, Kai’s and what will hopefully eventually be their journey together in future books, is something I’m so incredibly glad I got to be a part of.
