I love me a good suspense, thriller
type novel, and as far as female writers go for this sort of thing, J.L Drake
is at the top of my list. I say this not only because of the way she wrote and
kept me captivated with her previous series’ but also because of the tremendous
work she did keeping me just as engaged with the start of her new series, Devil’s
Reach, with the first book, Trigger.
I’m definitely familiar as of late with
the MC style writing from various different authors, and in that vein, I think
she stands tall with all of the other authors I’ve read that have done this
before in their writing. What sets this book apart though is the longevity and believability
of the suspense here. The level of it and it’s staying power throughout.
These characters weren’t pretty, in
fact some of their histories (which I think we’ll even learn more of as this
series progresses) are downright ugly. Things happening that I wouldn’t wish on
my worst enemy, but in that, there’s also a level of hope. That something
better is able to come out of the tragic circumstances and life decisions that
have plagued the characters when they come across one another.
The romance is steamy and its messy but
it works. It was believable. It worked for me.
Everything did.
My only complaint is….the cliffhanger.
God! I knew when I was nearing the last couple of percent in this story that
there was just so much more to be had, and there was this part of me that hoped
that those last two percent went on forever because man, did I need some
resolution after the ride I was taken on.
But alas, that was not to be and that’s
honestly another way that J.L. Drake seems to nail this genre every single
time. Keeping the reader (me) on the edge of their seats, delivering one hell
of set of circumstances to come and ending it. Cue the hair pulling, but in a
good way.
God I can’t wait for her to pen the
next story in this series and I really regret whatever books come after it for
me to read, because there’s a standard here, especially with suspense driven
stories that I’m not quite sure just anyone can reach.
Phenomenal characters, fast passed and
attention grabbing story with fantastic writing. I give this story all the
stars!

come, both for this series, and these characters but from this author as well.
