Being new to an authors work is always as much a daunting task for any reviewer as it can be for the author putting it out into the world.
You really have no idea what you’re going to get or if what you do get will be up your alley or not.
That being said, let’s just jump into what I really enjoyed most about this first time foray into this author.
Her ability to bring location to life. I have never been where this book takes place, and I probably never will get to go, but the way the author showed this place, it really was like I was there, through everything that happened. The dialect, the place itself, and all of the beauty it has within it, it came across so well in this story. I really did feel as though I took a trip somewhere I’d never been and still have the pictures of it in my mind. Absolutely wonderful.
The next thing I enjoyed was the detail given to how our lead character ends up where he is. It was very descriptive, but not in a way that would turn anyone away. Just vivid enough to get the point across, while also giving us a bigger insight into who he is and why he ends up where he does.  I felt a great connection because of this, at least to this character and everything he had been through.
Now, I’m well aware of the novella formula, and how you have to cram as much as possible into a small page count, but what I felt was lacking here and what I really wanted more of (and by more I don’t mean a ton, just a couple of extra scenes here or there) was the relationship that took place.  I didn’t get to see nearly enough of that which in turn made it harder to grasp onto and believe in. That’s not to say it wasn’t good, because it was and we know how they initially meet and so forth, but the development of it was lacking for me personally. I couldn’t connect to them both, just to the main character and it left me wanting more, for them specifically.
That being said, I enjoyed the writing style, along with the things I mentioned above and I definitely would tell you all to check the author out. Even do what I now need to do and go back and grab some of the older catalogue. I’m really glad I took the chance on this author and I can’t wait to see what she brings again in the future.
My thanks to everyone involved in giving me the chance to read this before official release. It was a journey I was pleased to have taken.
