The longer their silence fills the crowded room, the more I can hear my own heartbeat echoing off the tight walls. They are closing in, suffocating my sanity.
The policeman kicks off from the wall and repositions himself in front of the door. “Hello, madam. I am Mulazim Ahmed. I think we will wait until your husband gets here before we continue, yes?” His accent is heavy, his words and demeanor dismissive.
I blink once. Mulazim is Arabic for lieutenant. Why is a lieutenant on duty in the mall—and during Ramadan? The rank sounds too high and important for the position of a glorified mall cop. I’m not complaining. Maybe he’s the person who can help.
I slightly incline my head to show him I heard his words, frustrated we’ll waste more precious moments. The proof of my daughter’s abduction is screaming at us from the still on the screen, but we’ll wait. Wait for the man of the family to progress the investigation.
“Yes, sir. He shouldn’t be too long.”
I look down to Liam and squeeze his hand in reassurance. This must be completely daunting for him. He squeezes back, letting me know he’s there, not because he’s all right. I don’t expect him to be all right, and he definitely doesn’t look it. I’m sure that the fear and worry I see on his face are reflected on mine—skin drained of color and eyes wide in shock, darting around the room and back down again.
“Dad should be here soon,” he whispers, ever the boy emulating a man.

This story was wonderfully told and incredibly moving.
For a debut novel, as I’ve come to learn since reading, it was masterful.
This novel is basically the culmination of every parent’s worst nightmare, on their own soil. Now imagine losing your child on foreign soil and having your every move given to you by someone other than the people who care and love you most.
Imagine the loss of a child bringing about the loss of pretty much everything else you hold dear, even your own sense of self. Through this story, you’re able to put yourself in Jennifer’s shoes. Imagine every single second of it. Live it with everything you’re given and shown.
My heart ached for this mother throughout. Not knowing where her daughter could be, and just how deep the betrayal would go all in the effort to find out. Even in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have predicted the way this one would turn out.
Not only that, but this book was also quite a learning experience for me in terms of culture, language, rules, you name it. It was very eye opening and honestly made me want to learn more, so my hat is off to the author for that.
Perfectly paced, fantastically written and with all of the information given, researched, with characters that were all believable in the parts they played throughout.
I look forward to reading this author again in the future and seeing what other journeys and learning experiences she will bring to the table.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me take this journey with the character Jennifer and her family, before it’s official release. It was one heck of a ride.
