I’m guessing screwing my way through the female talent for the last ten years wasn’t what Louis Sachar had in mind when he said that.
Piece of shit. Home wrecker. Manwhore.
I’ve been called them all.
Earned them too.
I can’t erase what I’ve done, I own it. It just damn sure isn’t the legacy I imagined leaving behind when I finally hang up my boots and call it quits.
I’m not who I was when I agreed to do this for the rest of my life.
To be this.
The best professional wrestler on the planet? A Heavyweight Champion in multiple promotions? The top dog?
That, I wanted.
It’s in the selling of my soul to the devil and becoming Gavin the character more than Gavin the man, I didn’t see coming.
Somewhere along the way, dollar signs and perks overtook the rush of being in the ring.
Overtook the dream.
Changed me.
So, I did what my man Louis up there said.
I made the most of it until the most wasn’t good enough anymore.
I’m tired.
Tired of being Gavin “The Manwhore” Fortune.
After ten years, one too many burned relationships, and a black mark that no matter how much I do, I can’t wash off, I’m ready to be me.
No Fortune.
Just Gavin.
And Dawson, the newest devil in my world, she can get me there.
I just need to find a way to make her like me first.

I should have died.

I should have been forgotten.

But I didn’t, and I wasn’t.

Living the life most women only dream about, I was madly in love with my soulmate—Asher Valentine—amazing husband, loving father, and rock’s favorite kick-ass front man. A man who loved me every day, in every way, since we first met as teens fifteen years ago. We were blessed with a beautiful daughter who was the light of our life. My all-female rock band was tearing up the charts.

Then tragedy struck, and I lost it all.

Now all I have is a stack of journals, an antique key, and a big black void where my memories should be.

Used to be.

And I have him—this man with wild hair, tattoos from head to toe, a soft voice, and an even softer touch that gives me butterflies. He’s clearly hopelessly in love with his wife.

I’m told that’s me.

But that wife is gone, and she took everything they once had, leaving me in her place.

A broken replacement. A new version that doesn’t quite fit.

I’m slowly falling in love with him, but will he ever truly love me? Or will he forever be in love with her, the phantom woman who haunts us both?

Single-Dad
Firefighter

Since my divorce five years ago, these are the two labels I've identified with. Now, I'm ready for more. Ready to give dating a shot, even with an eight-year-old daughter and twenty-four hour shifts needing my attention.

When Sydney has a snow-day and we have an epic malfunction in the kitchen, we decide to head to the breakfast joint we've frequented for years.

Except today something is different.

Our normal waitress, Emma, isn't all baggy clothes and ducking her head to keep me from seeing her face. Today? Today I feel like I see her for the first time, and damned if our gazes don't ignite a heat I've only felt while on the job.

I am a sucker for a single parent story. Female or male, doesn’t matter to me. I just love watching parents fall in love.
This story had that, and more. As it appears all stories by this author seem to.
If you’re here because you want a book filled with drama, look somewhere else. As with a lot of her other books in the past, one of the best parts of reading a book by this author is, the lack of useless drama. It’s actually one of the reasons (besides her swoon worthy men, and focus on love) I keep coming back.
What was different even in that regard with this story was, even though she could have gone a little crazy with the ex drama here (the other parent to the child), she didn’t. And the situations that present in regards to this woman, I loved them because even though things may not have ended well, I watched this man be an adult. Be the epitome of a father, especially in regards to how he handled his ex.
As with books previous, again in this story, no matter how short, the author brought the steam, but only where it needed to be and it was all very believable, since, even with the shortness of this book, I was able to connect to both characters easily.
I loved Sydney and the rest of the firefighters we’re shown throughout. They were the perfect additions to the story and added quite a bit of humor to an already great storyline.
My only complaint with the story was, it was too short! I need more!
If you’re a sucker for single parent love stories like me, give this one a shot, and hopefully, you’ll love it as much as I did.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read an advance copy of this before release. Ash and Emma’s journey, along with Syd’s was one I was thankful to have taken.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The longer their silence fills the crowded room, the more I can hear my own heartbeat echoing off the tight walls. They are closing in, suffocating my sanity.
The policeman kicks off from the wall and repositions himself in front of the door. “Hello, madam. I am Mulazim Ahmed. I think we will wait until your husband gets here before we continue, yes?” His accent is heavy, his words and demeanor dismissive.
I blink once. Mulazim is Arabic for lieutenant. Why is a lieutenant on duty in the mall—and during Ramadan? The rank sounds too high and important for the position of a glorified mall cop. I’m not complaining. Maybe he’s the person who can help.
I slightly incline my head to show him I heard his words, frustrated we’ll waste more precious moments. The proof of my daughter’s abduction is screaming at us from the still on the screen, but we’ll wait. Wait for the man of the family to progress the investigation.
“Yes, sir. He shouldn’t be too long.”
I look down to Liam and squeeze his hand in reassurance. This must be completely daunting for him. He squeezes back, letting me know he’s there, not because he’s all right. I don’t expect him to be all right, and he definitely doesn’t look it. I’m sure that the fear and worry I see on his face are reflected on mine—skin drained of color and eyes wide in shock, darting around the room and back down again.
“Dad should be here soon,” he whispers, ever the boy emulating a man.

This story was wonderfully told and incredibly moving.
For a debut novel, as I’ve come to learn since reading, it was masterful.
This novel is basically the culmination of every parent’s worst nightmare, on their own soil. Now imagine losing your child on foreign soil and having your every move given to you by someone other than the people who care and love you most.
Imagine the loss of a child bringing about the loss of pretty much everything else you hold dear, even your own sense of self. Through this story, you’re able to put yourself in Jennifer’s shoes. Imagine every single second of it. Live it with everything you’re given and shown.
My heart ached for this mother throughout. Not knowing where her daughter could be, and just how deep the betrayal would go all in the effort to find out. Even in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have predicted the way this one would turn out.
Not only that, but this book was also quite a learning experience for me in terms of culture, language, rules, you name it. It was very eye opening and honestly made me want to learn more, so my hat is off to the author for that.
Perfectly paced, fantastically written and with all of the information given, researched, with characters that were all believable in the parts they played throughout.
I look forward to reading this author again in the future and seeing what other journeys and learning experiences she will bring to the table.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me take this journey with the character Jennifer and her family, before it’s official release. It was one heck of a ride.
