What I like most
about picking up and reading a K. Webster book, is that I never truly know from
one story to the next just what I’m going to end up getting.
I’ve read stories by
her at their most contemporary, some even paranormal in nature and then with
the last few, I’ve gone full on dark side right along with a bunch of other
readers as we devour the writing style she presents fantastically in each new
book released. This story is a lot like the last few. It’s not a book for the
faint of heart. It will break your heart, torture it really, before it all
begins to wrap itself around and make it better. So if you can’t handle rape,
physical abuse at its most extreme, you may want to stay away or tread
carefully here.
This is a whole new
level of dark side, people.
But more than the
more darker elements, this book is also one that makes you think. I absolutely
love books like that. Where I can’t figure out how things are going to play out
right away. Ones that make me have to piece things together over time the more
I read, but that also throw me curveballs when I do think I’ve finally figured
out what’s going on. At one point, I actually think I tapped my kindle and
asked it what the hell was really going on here. I wanted answers that bad and
couldn’t turn the pages fast enough in order to find out.
The biggest conundrum
for a long time being, just who was going to stand with our Sweet Jayne at the
end when all was said and done. There were multiple players here and even
though I knew there was one for sure I didn’t want standing tall at the end, at
any given point, I wasn’t sure how it would all play out. If, like in the past
with this authors work, we would see a happy ending for anyone at all, or if
this one would go against the grain and end badly.
Basically this book
had me gripped right from page one. Had my mind working (sometimes overloading
with the sheer amount of questions I had and answers I wanted). Keeping me firmly planted until every single
question I had was taken care of and I was given even more than I started out
wanting. And In my estimation, that is what makes good fiction. Even with the
truly dark tone here, I ate it up much like I have the author’s previous work.
The only issue I had
that kept this from being a full five star read was wrapping my brain around
what happened to put Nadia on the journey she’s on. I connected with the
relationships, with her on her own but attempting to understanding putting
yourself through what she did for someone she barely even knew, well I just
kept running into a brick wall. I couldn’t put myself in her position even with
as much as I want tdo good by everyone I come into contact with. Did that one
little niggling aspect take away from the story that was born from that
happening? Not really. It was just a small aspect I couldn’t wrap my head
around.
I think if you’re a
fan of this author, of truly dark reads, a suspense driven plot you can’t
predict or stories with as many emotionally driven scenes as there were truly
steamy ones, you’ll enjoy this.
My thanks to the
author and all others involved in letting me read this before release. This is
definitely a journey for all of the players in the story that I am glad I took
a chance on. No one keeps me engaged quite like K. Webster.
