I’ve heard a whole bunch about this book.
Nothing too detailed (mainly because I’m the chick that doesn’t read reviews)
but enough to know that a lot of people are talking about it and it seemed like
something I would most likely like to read.
Read I did finally and here we are.
So I can get it out the way early, I’m gonna touch on a couple things that people seem to look for when they’re reading (that I don’t) so they know the gist of what they’re getting going in. At least in basic terms.
This has insta-love. Whatever the heck that is (seriously, my views on that topic differ considerably from most), and it’s got what some consider an NA staple in that it’s the popular jock and the bookish girl falling in love.
Okay, now that I’ve got that out of the way, here’s where I give my thoughts on all of it. Staples and all.
Knox Masters coming into this as a virgin was a breath of fresh air for me. Maybe I just don’t read enough of these types of books but this is something I just don’t come across enough in my reading travels. It’s most likely always the female that’s hanging on to her V card and the “hero” is the one removing it. Flip the script here because despite how out of this world it might seem based on the type of guy Knox is when the book starts (cocky and full of bravado), he’s the one holding onto the card.
Did that sway me? Yeah, kind of. I mean, I was already all in with the way he was right from the first couple of chapters, but his reasoning for this and being so unlike the rest of the team, it was refreshing as hell. Since it’s kind of a given that Ellie is going to be the one making him break all of his “rules”, I was hooked in seeing how it would all eventually play out and I got the payoff I was after.
The sexual tension alone was brilliantly done. It might very well have had the insta-love feel (more from Knox than Ellie), but the author didn’t have these two getting down and dirty right away. She built it and in my opinion built it incredibly. By the time these two finally do give in to what they’re feeling for each other, I was more than ready.
And it was worth the wait. And hot. Like....WOW hot. LOL
I'm not normally a girl that goes into a book looking for steam but for the record this one had it off the damn charts. And it all fit in a way that I need it to. It was all based around love and attraction. Not just sex for the sake of it. So the steam made a believer out of me here. So if that's your thing, you'll love it.
Now it doesn’t always happen, but sometimes with books, I get lucky and I become invested in book characters apart from the romance element of the story and I’m rooting for them in other ways. This happened here. While I freely admit to being head over feet for Knox because of the way he was written (the type of guy he was, how romantic he was under that football player persona), I was just as hooked with Ellie and her journey.
Her relationship with her football playing brother, the obligation she feels to him and what she has spent the time from eight grade doing for her brother (believing at the time that it was right despite deep down knowing it wasn’t) and then the decision she ends up making that affects what she has with Knox. I was in all of it with her and understood it. The struggle within her was real and I felt every bit of it.
At one point, what she’s having to go through hitting the fan and creating as much agony in me as it did her. She wasn’t your typical NA style heroine at all. At least I didn’t get that vibe from her. I genuinely liked her. Hated her struggles. And even more than all of that, loved her with Knox. It was the perfect balance and so called insta-love or not, I wanted a HEA for them together and apart.
Not spoiling what happens and how, but I got what I was after and instead of having it be something that gets dropped right at the end and wrapped up quickly, it’s a bit more drawn out and given the attention it deserves. No quick wrap up here, but definitely a fulfilling one when it happened.
The football team was awesome. Hilarious isn’t even a good enough word to explain them. The sheer amount of laughter I experienced this also threw me for a loop. It was a nice addition to what I knew was going to be some drama later when everything came out and the main characters were pulled apart. They played their parts brilliantly and I have to say, I want more with them all. I want books for them all. That’s how much of an impact they made. Plus I’m a sucker for a good laugh.
He didn’t appear much in the story, but Ty made quite an impact in the few times he was there and not in terms of just furthering the story. There’s more going on with him and even if I never see the rest of these characters again, I want to see more with him. There’s potential there and one I would kill to see expanded on. I have a feeling I might end up loving him more than I did Knox.
I don’t know what else to say about this book other than that I loved it, it was everything I could have ever asked for in a story and was a full and complete reading experience for me. One that was executed perfectly and one I would definitely read again and again.
