Fear University
Synopsis
I’ve always known I was a monster, and I don’t mean some teenage vampire shit either.

My mother abandoned me when I was ten years old because I have a freakish mutant disease that makes me incapable of feeling pain. I bounced from one foster family to another because too many people like to test my medical condition in a game of “Try To Make Ollie Scream.” At sixteen, I killed a man for taking that game too far.

Two years later, I’m still on the run in Kodiak, Alaska. Here, I’m the most dangerous person around, until I come face to face with a creature that should only exist in folklore. The monster is an aswang, and I, with my medical anomaly, am uniquely qualified to hunt the beast that haunts the night. At least, that’s what the two scarred, mostly crazy ‘swang hunters tell me when they kidnap me and take me to Fear University, a school where young students learn to hunt and kill aswangs.

I arrive at the university a prisoner, but I stay because I finally find my freedom.

For once in my life, I belong. I’m needed. I make a home for myself inside the university masquerading as an old Alaskan prison. Something close to happiness warms my icy heart when I’m with my scarred, still mostly crazy tutor, Luke Aultstriver. For a murdering runaway like me, Fear University is a haven where I can put my skills to good use hunting monsters in the night.

But when certain truths come to light and even more lies are exposed, I fear that I, Ollie Andrews, am the worst kind of monster of all. And, maybe, they should be hunting me.

This book. What a spell binding read this book was. I’m still trying to put the pieces together and it’s been hours since I finished the story, that’s how engaging it was to read.

This is my first go round with this author, but I can most definitely say that she did not disappoint.

Fear University is quite the original take on today’s version of paranormal style fantasy. From the monsters hunted, to the real monsters living behind human faces, it was all very unique and intriguing and did not let up not once the entire time I was reading.

Right from the first page, when you meet Ollie and learn what she’s capable of doing based on her ability to not feel fear, you’re drawn into this world where monsters are real and that there are indeed people out there that have been born and bred to fight in a war of sorts against them.

In fact, not only are people born and bred through familial lines, but they’re also brought together in a school dedicated to it. A school that Ollie herself gets to experience when she’s snatched up based on what Luke and Hatter have witnessed her do and brought back there.

Having spent the majority of my reading time as of late strictly reading romances, this was a nice change of pace for me. While there was indeed romance within the pages of this one, I admired the way the author laced it in throughout everything else going on in the story. It didn’t take center stage, nor did it take away from the very real threats that seemed to pop up with each passing day that Ollie spent at the University.

The connection between Luke and Ollie, how similar they really are underneath it all, wasn’t thrown at us all at once either. This was an incredible slow burn so that when it does finally happen, it sizzles off the pages. You can feel what’s taking place in your bones. It was another way in which the author blew me away during my reading of this. Ollie and Like most definitely made sense and their connection was very real to me right from the jump.

But this was so much more than just a story about Ollie and Luke. It contains within its pages a brilliant mix of multiple different genres, all brought together in a way that almost makes it impossible to classify. We’re privy to some of the best bone chilling, edge of your seat style suspense that I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a while, along with some great heart stopping action sequences perfectly blended in and around elements of the paranormal as it pertains to the aswangs and how they are hunted.

There’s love, friendship, loss, confusion and a whole lot of pain, both physical and emotional. But for Ollie, in a manner of speaking, it’s also a coming of age tale. For until she gets to Fear University, she’s perceived herself to be a certain way and through her time there, comes to learn she’s so much more. While also coming to terms with the fact that there’s still so much to learn.

There’s bad guys, good guys and those riding the line in between, all of them giving you pause and making you question just what their true motivations are and how it’s all going to play out in the end. Or at least that’s how it was for me.

Because this is the first book in a series, this book does end with a cliff-hanger of sorts, but as far as those go, this was more open ended than it was leaving you on the edge teetering and in my estimation, was ended in just the right way and in the right place. The need for answers, to know how things are going to go, whether or not Ollie, Luke, Sunny, Hatter and the others will be able to make it out of this alive or end up losing the fight is definitely strong here and I can’t wait to see where the author and her characters take us next.

This was an incredible read and one that I am definitely glad that I took the chance on.

If you’re a fan of the paranormal, supernatural or anything in between, you definitely need to give this book a chance. It’s my hope that you’ll enjoy it as much as I did and be as eager to dive into the next one as I now am.

My thanks to the author and all others involved for letting me read this before its official release. I enjoyed the journey immensely.
