Some
people call it puppy love,
But
I know the truth.
Even
though we were kids, too young to know better,
I
knew.
I
was absolutely head-over-heels in love with Cody Jamison.
There
wasn’t a moment in my life that he wasn’t a part of.
There
wasn’t a part of me that didn’t belong to him.
And
just as I was about to tell him…
He
left.
Left
town.
Left
me.
Shattering
my heart into pieces.
But
now, he’s back.
Just
like that.
But,
we’re no longer those bright-eyed little kids we once were.
He
just re-emerged,
Claiming
a spot as the lead guitarist in my brother’s band,
As
if nothing ever changed.
But
it did.
Everything's
different now.
And
I won't let this asshole strum his way back in,
Reclaiming
my heart,
Not
without an explanation.
He’s
going to have to work for it,
For
me.
Cody
Jamison can’t have me,
Until
I have the truth.

“Oh
my God, Shan, quit being a wuss!”
“I
can't, it's too high!” I yelled down at my brother, who was safe on the ground.
I don’t know why I let him talk me in to doing stupid things like this.
“C’mon,
Shanny, just put your foot in the holes and jump when you get to the last one,”
CJ egged on.
Anytime
he was around and asked me to do something, the fear inside of me went away.
“Okay.”
One.
Two.
Three.
“Ouch!”
“Holy
crap, are you all right?” My brother asked, as the sky spun behind his and CJ’s
heads.
“My
head hurts really bad.”
“Dang,
I’ll go and get Mom. Can you stay with her, CJ?” He nodded his head, and then
helped me sit up. He kept looking at me funny with his eyes; eyes that were the
color of chocolate.
“Why
are you looking at me like that?”
“I
was looking at the small dots across your face. What are they?”
I
placed my hands over my face, and rubbed my cheeks, wishing they would come
off. “My mommy calls them ‘freckles’ and I hate them.”
“Why?”
"Because
people are always teasing me about them. Mom said I got them from being in the
sun too much."
"So
let's call them sun kisses! The sun loved your face so much, it left little
kisses behind."
I
giggled so hard, that it made my head hurt more. CJ was almost thirteen, like
my older brother, but he made me feel fuzzy inside.
