The problem is, Tegan isn’t rock star girlfriend material. She has ambitions of her own and refuses to let anything stand in the way of her plans. But when Jax and Tegan’s relationship becomes public knowledge life becomes a hell of a lot more complicated.

Reviewer: Melyssa
Cadence is the first book I’ve had the
pleasure of reading by Lisa Swallow. But with the band of characters that came
alive in its pages apart from the main characters, I’m sure won’t be my last.
It follows the guitarist for Ruby Riot in
Jax and the sister of the drummer for Blue Phoenix. Tegan. A band which I’ve
come to learn after doing some research into this author during the reading of
the book I’ve learned has already had a series dedicated to it.
Now usually when there’s a book with a
character named Jax, I’m all over it anyway, but add in a rockstar and I’m all
over it. There’s just something about those types of books that draws me into
them. This having both and it was a no brainer.
Now normally, the first time the main
characters come across each other, I’m not affected. It’s in the way their
story grows that captures me the most, but here, that aspect started very early
on. The first time Jax and Tegan meet, even after finishing the book weeks ago,
is still crystal clear in my mind. The hilarity in it. The head slapping “did I
really just say that” that I came away with, especially when Jax learns that
Tegan isn’t who he thought she was, was expertly done. It bonded me to the
characters long before I’m usually connected. So kudos to the author for that.
Then the instance that brings them
together in a way that’s more than just adversarial, which up until that point
it had been based on them both fighting the attraction that’s damn near
impossible to deny. I enjoyed that aspect. I enjoyed seeing Jax step away from the
typical rockstar reaction to the situation he found himself in and behave like
a man. A real human being. I also enjoyed everyone else’s reactions to what he
did as well. It read very real to me. Bryn being intense with his protection of
his sister and then the others from both bands not wanting to believe that Jax
had actually done the right thing and not the pig headed thing.
I enjoyed Tegan and Jax together. I think
they both challenged each other in a way that wouldn’t have worked with anyone
but them. Tegan offering up a way of being that Jax wasn’t used to and Jax
introducing her to a side she might not have seen if she’d stayed on the
sidelines as just Bryn’s sister. They made mistakes together, blew things out
of proportion, fought like an old married couple, but also loved fiercely,
cared more than either of them even thought were possible and came alive
together in ways previously unknown.
I enjoyed that their relationship just
wasn’t this whirlwind of perfection and passion. It was a combination of what
makes real relationships whether with Rockstars or average people work. It was
and they were imperfectly imperfect.
The author in my estimation seemed to
capture the fan reaction to the news of one of the hottest Rockstars around
being off the market very realistically. I can see fans acting this way even
though I don’t live the lifestyle. In fact, all you have to do is spend a
little time online and you see the level of fan girl insanity that takes over
with some people and their adoration of their favorite celebrities. The book
was already working quite well for me but this aspect, the reaction from both
of them, was just so organic that it sealed the deal.
The payoff that I was after in terms of a
happily ever after, or even just a happy for now was given in spades here. I
got to witness growth from both characters, both together and apart and in the end,
it made me believe in them making it work in a longer term arrangement, though
it wasn’t always an easy road to get there.
The only thing that kept this book from
being a 5* plus read for me was the pacing. It was a slow go for quite a bit of
the book. Evenly paced throughout to be sure, but quite a bit slower and more
drawn out in areas than I was expecting it to be when I picked it up. Though
that opinion is not based on having read the authors work before, but only what
I know about the other rockstar romances I’ve read.
Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed this
book, and would recommend it to fans of the author, rockstar romances, or even
fans of stories that progress over time instead of just happening overnight. I
definitely look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
My thanks to the author and all others
involved in letting me read this before official release. It was a pleasure.
